Can the Devil Manipulate Events In An Individual’s Life To Make That Person Sin?
One thing for sure is that satan has no power over anyone that does not allow him to have it. There’s no such thing as “demon possession” today that would cause a person to act contrary to their will. Zechariah 13:2 prophesied that in the gospel dispensation “unclean spirits” would cease.
It is true that “the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.” (I John 5:19). But it’s because the masses allow it, yes, even desire it; not because the devil wields some kind of mystical influence over a person.
“Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.”(James 1:13-15). The Devil, nor even God, can make you do something against your will! God has given to every individual the right to choose either good or evil.
The devil influences men and women today the same way he did Eve in the garden of Eden: through the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. These things are of the world, not of the Father (1 John 2:15-16). Satan is the prince of this world (John 12:31), and controls the kingdoms of this world, yet not in any direct manner that makes a person sin. When men yield to their own lusts, they are yielding to the influence of satan. He therefore controls them, but only because they choose to follow. It’s an act of the will.
Multitudes are happy to be deceived by the Devil. In II Thessalonians 2:9-10 we read, “ The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish,” This is not true power, signs and wonders. It is lying power, lying signs and lying wonders. Verses 10-12 describes why many people are drawn away by such, “ and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”
